Requirements for languages and levels

Minimum level of language required to study at the EPFL

The EPFL recommends that candidates beginning their studies at the EPFL have a minimum level of C1 in the languages of teaching.

As far as the languages of instruction are concerned, acquirement of level C1 is strongly recommended (in French/English for Bachelor/master courses respectively). This is essential if you wish to study under the best possible conditions and ensure your academic success.

In English, first year Bachelor students are required to take an assessment test which will allow them to establish their level in the language.  If level C1 is not achieved, further study will be necessary.  The EPFL Language Centre offers students various possibilities for achieving their objectives in this field.

Languages of instruction

The EPFL Bachelors are taught in French.

The language of teaching for the Masters courses depends greatly on the chosen course; some masters are entirely in English, whilst others entirely in French or bilingual French/English. You will find more information on page Cycle Master.

Language Centre

In order to encourage and promote the development of linguistic and intercultural competence, the EPFL offers free language courses to its students throughout the year, thanks to its on-campus Language centre.

Below are tables which allow you to link these language levels with the results of the most commonly used tests.
